Safety Counts
Not every job is suitable for a teenager. The government limits the types and amount of work that teens can do, but many employers are unaware of these regulations, and many teenagers are unwilling to question adult authority.
- Even when jobs are legal, teens may not receive proper training or supervision.
- Many teenagers have not had enough experience behind the wheel to be a pizza delivery person.
- Late-shift work at a convenience store is another job parents should question. Teens might have to work late on school nights.
- Although teens are prohibited from working on roofing jobs, those 16 years and older can legally do construction jobs like painting and installing windows—tasks that require attention to safety at any age.
Fortunately, these jobs aren't the only options for teens. Many job Web sites list teen internships, retail work, camp counseling and other positions that provide work experience. Also tap into schools, community centers, your local YMCA or youth groups for leads. |
