Managing Your Money

Your first course for college is “How to get the best deal in town on your financial needs.” And here’s the lesson plan: You’ll need checks, a debit card or a credit card to pay for books, supplies, etc., so why not take advantage of Navy Federal’s no-fee checking with a Campus checking account, a Visa® Check Card and CUCARD®, our dual-purpose ATM and debit card.

Campus Checking features:

  • no minimum balance requirement
  • no monthly service or per-item charges—a big plus. Banks can charge you fees that can wipe out your balance over the school year
  • write up to five checks per statement period with no fee; 25¢ per check over five
  • no fees or surcharges for using a Navy Federal or Co-op Network ATM
  • ATM rebates of up to $10 per statement period for PLUS® System ATM transactions
  • a monthly electronic statement detailing all the activity on your account
  • easy change of mailing address from dorm to home and back again, instantly, with just a toll-free phone call
  • FREE starter supply of checks—and a choice of designs

We wouldn’t want you to go off to school unprepared. So when you open your Campus Checking account, we’ll supply you with a starter kit of checks and an order form to select from an array of pictorial designs from angels to comic strips, from military to marigolds.

A word to the wise: Here’s where we state the obvious: You can only write a check if you’ve got money in your account. Aside from the fact that it’s illegal to write a “bad” check, it can also cost you big money if the check “bounces.” And you get charged twice — with fees that can range up to $40 or more! — once from your bank or credit union, and once by the person to whom you gave the check.

Bottom line: Keep your check register up to date, noting deposits, checks written and ATM withdrawals and debits made. And get on the horn to Mom and Dad if you need more money — at Navy Federal, they can transfer money to your account night or day online!
